The 10 Minutes a Day 'Dance With Me' Challenge

All of the experts say that in order to lose weight and improve health, overweight people like us need to do 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity 5 times a week. Moderate to vigorous. Really? I can’t even walk down to the end of my driveway and back without being out of breath and in pain – how am I going to manage 30 minutes of even more intense activity? Maybe some of you reading know where I’m coming from. Maybe you’re sitting there – 300, 350, 400 lbs or more – thinking “I can’t do 30 minutes so why should I even bother?”

It’s true that I can’t do 30 minutes, but maybe I can do 10. Or maybe I can only do 5. Anything is better than nothing and if I can do 5 minutes today, maybe I can do 7 minutes tomorrow and maybe that 7 minutes will build up to 10 minutes next week and so on and so forth.

So here is the challenge:

Just dance for 10 minutes a day, everyday. That’s roughly 3 songs. If you can’t dance for 10 minutes straight (don’t worry, I can’t either) then take it one song at a time and take a break in between. It doesn’t matter how good of a dancer you are. Even if all you can do is stand there and step side-to-side, just enjoy yourselves! Remember, “dance like nobody’s watching”. Do it for a week and then come back and let me know how it went.

  1. Danced to the B-52’s “Love Shack” yesterday. It’s a 4 minute song and I barely made it through. It’s amazing how difficult it is to try and move a 422 lb body in time to music. Going to do all 3 songs today :)
